Jury Duty

Week four of my two week jury duty service began this morning - to find out that we would not be hearing the final defense witnesses and closing arguments with the hopes of FINALLY beginning deliberation, but instead we were sent home and told to come back Wednesday morning. Although the judge’s wife went into labor Friday morning (one week early), she didn’t deliver until Monday morning (today). It’s just unbelievable the chain of events that have continually delayed this process. Anyhow, the judge seems like a very nice guy, so congratulations to him and his family.

Tom “Gene Pool” Borghi

KCSB, in many ways, is like the land of misfit toys when it comes to the folks on our air waves. I’ll often look around during our staff meetings and wonder how such different personality types ended up in the same room. And I take great pride in working at a place with such personalities - most of the time, anyway. Tom “Gene Pool” Borghi fit in perfectly. One of KCSB’s dearest programmers, he passed away from lung cancer last week. The Daily Nexus ran a nice article on his passing.

Tom was a really great guy, and while it’s common to say all sorts of nice things about someone after they’re gone, nice things really did apply to the Tom Borghi I knew.

I tried to talk Tom into writing a book on music. I was sure the rest of the world would appreciate his take as much as the folks at KCSB did - but he constantly respond with, “Who would care to read anything I wrote?”. Insecurity, humility - may be both and much more prevented him from taking it seriously. I just wished it would have happened. There was just too much knowledge and unique perspective - and the driest of wits - to not share with the rest of the world. Save for the recordings of his radio show, all of that is now lost.

At least I have the memory of a truely great and amazing individual. Goodbye, Tom. I’ll miss you.

Adventures in Wining

Photos added of Jennifer and I out wine tasting with some friends.

Note about wine tasting in Santa Barbara: Try to go to different “pourers”. That way, you can get a double tasting of everything. Just be prepared, if need be, to lie about the last wine you tried. Also, complaining about “how bad the reds” are, and insisting on “trying the whites again” works as well. Unfortunately, you always start with whites, so it doesn’t work vice-versa. And you might want to stop the shenanigans when they start giving you dirty looks. Hey, you are not there because you’re classy. You are there to drink.
