Fun at the Bwall Pwak

hotdog.jpgI returned from my trip to Lowell, Massachusetts relatively unscathed - and, if anything, gained a new appreciation for the New York-Penn League Class A baseball stylings of the Lowell Spinners.

Unfortunately, minor league baseball bore no resemblance to the actual reason I was in Lowell, and that was for the twelfth annual Grassroots Radio Conference (GRC). Normally, I find myself a bit out of place at these sorts of things. I am not “lefty” enough for the GRC crowd, as evidenced by the reaction to my admission, over cocktails, that I voted for John Kerry in the last election - which went over like a fart in church. I blame the Bushmills (for my admission, not the vote). The fact that I saw the vote as a vote over who would probably kill less people didn’t really win them over either. When I mentioned that I was in Oaxaca last fall during the teachers’ strike, then my then-tarnished lefty-cred was restored.

bryruss.jpgI was, however, dorky enough for the Penguin Day and the Grassroots Use of Technology conferences that were held in conjunction with the GRC. It’s like my inner lefty meets my not-so-inner dork - neither of which is entirely comfortable around other lefties (or other dorks, for that matter). But the conference was a good experience, and at its worst moments, reaffirmation that KCSB is in pretty decent shape.

Of course, the highlight of the trip was the Lowell Spinners. For $3.50 (standing room only, although the “good” seats were not that much more expensive), I got see 9 full innings of minor league baseball action in a place where baseball is not something with which you mess around. These people take their baseball seriously.

So with that conference, about six weeks of weekend obligations come to a close - and none too soon. TGIF, and have a good weekend folks.

Lulling to sleep

Tomorrow, I fly to Lowell, Massachusetts for a radio conference. I’m told by some of my more Bostonian friends that Lowell is actually pronounced “lull” in the Boston drawl - which does not bode well for my trip or the conference. Also not boding well is the 8:40a flight out of LAX, thus necessitating a 4:30am drive down to Los Angeles - the price I pay for someone else booking my flight.

Anyway, I’ll be out of commission until then I get back on Monday, so have a good weekend.

Behemothed Experienced

Terbo in all his glory Thanks to everyone who came out last Thursday to see the final show of The Behemoth Experience (photos are available on the Photos page, and additional photos were taken by Melina Dellamarggio).

I’ve played guitar off and on for about 20 years (which is a scary thought in and of itself), but I’d be hard pressed to think of a performance that I enjoyed more than last Thursday night’s. The crowd, for whatever reason, really enjoyed our music, we had a blast playing, and the whole evening was just a load of fun. Thanks to Bill and the Muddy Waters staff for allowing us to perform in their establishment. I’d also like to thank The Escalades and The C-Legs for sharing the card with us.

So since that was the last of The Behemoth Experience, I’d like to get a little sentimental for a moment…

I’d really like to thank my band mates - Mark-David, John, Abby, Rob, and Brian for creating one of the most enjoyable musical experiences I’ve ever had. When the band began, I had reached a point at which I never thought I would perform in front of people ever again. It was a blast sharing the stage with you guys - and made for some experiences I’ll never forget.

The Behemoth has been experienced - long live the Behemoth Experience.

The End of an Error

behemothThis will probably be the last chance I have to blog until Sunday at the earliest - things are just crazy busy right now. But there is one thing I’d like to mention.

Since 2002, I’ve played lead guitar in a satirical band called The Behemoth Experience. This Thursday evening, at 7pm at Muddy Waters Coffee House, the Behemoth Experience will perform live for the final time. The show will also be broadcast live by my employer - 91.9 KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara (on the web at http://www.kcsb.org).

The show starts at 7pm (also featuring The C-Legs and The Escalades) - but the live broadcast will not start until 10pm. The Behemoth Experience will perform sometime after 10pm.

If you’re in Santa Barbara, please drop by Muddy Waters (508 East Haley Street just off State Street). If you’re not, tune in to KCSB online at http://www.kcsb.org and check us out.
