¡Vacacíon sin Americanos, por favor!

Yes, I am on vacation, but I have to vent for a moment.

One of the things I like most about visiting Oaxaca is that I get to take a break from Americans. That’s not to say that all Americans who visit here are annoying - Jennifer has a few friends who are very nice and a lot of fun - but occasionally you’ll run into a few who remind you just why you left the bloody country in the first place.

Case in point: Jennifer and I finally bit the bullet and ventured off to a café we’ve started calling The Gringo Café, where a lot of Americans hang out when they want wireless with their margaritas. About this time of the year, however, a few students from another UC (which shall remain nameless) visit Oaxaca to study, and prove that, even in another country, they can be as obnoxious as ever.

Like, I totally understand that, you, like, you know, totally need a facial, and like, it’s totally cheaper here than, like, it is back home, but, like, you know, does the entire freakin’ café need to hear about it? Like, totally, you know?

And stealing one from Family Guy, I had no idea how much tension can be provided by listening to a voice that sounds like this:

NonDescript Finalé: 5 Oct 2007

So this is the final episode of NonDescript for the foreseeable future - and it was recorded in the apartment that Jennifer and I are renting here in Oaxaca, Mexico. Things are drastically different compared to our experience last year. The entire pulse of the city has changed - not just in terms of the amount of people about town. There’s definitely less “tension” in the air - although APPO’s presence is still felt in more subtle ways. In some ways, the situation feels more complicated. Not better or worse, just more complicated.

Anyway, we are doing more of the touristy things this week. Last night, we spent watching (and sampling portions of) a mezcal-based cocktail contest. The unofficial winner was the maker of a mezcal and cucumber concoction with chili pepper around the rim of the glass. While that might not sound like a tasty combo, it was rather delicious. Afterwards, Jennifer and I hung out with Andrew, the new owner of El Naranjo, who was exceptionally gracious in hosting Jennifer and I at his restaurant into the wee hours of the morning.

Tonight, however, is first night of lucha libre. We purchased tickets to the CMLL event tonight, and we also got front row seating to the AAA event featuring La Parka next week. Photos will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, thanks to those of you who enjoyed NonDescript over the summer. The final show will air tomorrow at 1pm PDT.

Vacation, all I ever wanted

So here I am sitting in LAX’s international terminal, using their free (!?!) wireless internet while waiting to board my flight. For anyone doubting that I really need a vacation, I really, really thought I was leaving tomorrow until I checked my itinerary on Sunday. So convinced I was that I was leaving Tuesday, that I even had an argument with Jennifer over my arrival time. I decided not to tell her I was arriving a day earlier (or, from her point of view - I’m not arriving a day late) - so I’ll knock on her apartment door sometime tomorrow morning.

Amongst all those who know me, no part of this situation is a surprises.

Anyway, between charging my iPod (which I forgot to do) with my almost battery-dead laptop (which I also forgot to charge), I doubt I have much time. But allow my to express my frustration with the LAX airport with two photographs (taken on the same wall, 50 feet from each other):

Until next time, from Oaxaca.
