The (Belated) Return of Yacht Rock!

So what I am I thankful for in 2008? Barack Obama as President-elect. Yes. The continued fight against Prop 8 in California. Definitely yes. Jennifer finally finishing her Ph.D. Oh, hell yes.

But almost nothing trumps the return of Yacht Rock. Well, maybe that last one…

So about two years ago, I discovered this web-only series called Yacht Rock - a mock-umentary of a very specific period in the history of rock. I could explain it in more detail, but what fun is that? Rather, I highly suggest watching all ten original episodes of the series. It won’t take you that long, and, assuming you are in the right frame of mind, you really won’t regret it.

In June of 2006, the series was “canceled” after ten episodes, but, much to my delight, I discovered that the creators of Yacht Rock released an 11th episode in January of this year. Why it took me 11 months to discover it, I cannot say. But it’s really, really funny. Like Kevin-Bacon-meets-Jimmy-Buffett funny.

And not to put too fine a point on it, you really should watch most, if not all, of the previous ten episodes to really appreciate the brilliance of Yacht Rock and fully appreciate the genius of the 11th episode - especially with regard to all of the “smooth” references. You are warned.

So here it is - the 11th episode of Yacht Rock!

(Oh, and just a quick warning - profanity abounds.)

NonDescript Playlist: 25 November 2008

This week’s play list. No Thanksgiving theme, because that would be cheesy.

NonDescript DisCovered: 18 Novemeber 2008

Given the fact that we are recovering from a major wild fire that took out over 200 homes, some of which were owned by people my girlfriend knows personally and one of which was owned by a faculty member who was on her Ph.D. committee when she graduated last Spring (I think, when this all shakes out and given the size of this town, everyone will know at least one person who lost a home), I kind of felt a little levity was in order.

KCSB-FM canceled our on-air fundraiser that was scheduled for this very week, as it seemed like a bad time to beg for money for ourselves while the city was on fire, and FCC regulations for non-commercial broadcasters prevent us from raising money for others over the air. If any of my podcast listeners were thinking about donating to KCSB-FM during this time, I’d ask that you consider giving money to two victims that suffered severe burns and who also lost there home:

The Lance And Carla Burn Fund:
Santa Barbara Bank & Trust
1483 East Valley Road
Montecito, CA 93108-1248

I don’t know either of these people, but I do know that KCSB’s operating budget is in good shape comparatively speaking. Despite all of the headlines regarding this fire talking about “Oprah” and “celebrities”, the fact is that a lot of the homes taken out were owned by working class people who bought in Santa Barbara 20-30 years ago when property values weren’t the obscene amount that they are currently - even in a mortgage crisis. But, as I seem to do a lot lately, I digress…

Or consider giving to some of the victims of the huge fires in Los Angeles and Orange County.

Anyway, here were are with another cover song edition of NonDescript. At least locally, I hope this brings a smile to someone’s face.

Everything is late today, as I took my Veteran’s Day yesterday in order to recharge my batteries. We, as in KCSB-FM, are about to head into our annual on-air fundrasier, which is, under normal circumstances, a bit stressful. Trying to raise money while the economy is in the toilet… well, the next ten days should be very interesting.

And for those of you saying to yourselves, “But aren’t you in Santa Barbara where money abounds?” Let’s just say that the folks in Hope Ranch aren’t exactly our primary listening audience.

I’ll try to add band links when I get some down time.
