For those of you, like myself, who muscled through the vice-presidential debate last Thursday thinking you understood the purposes of punditry and political discourse only to find the post-debate analysis to contain headlines like “For Palin, A Tie is a Win” and “Palin avoids questions, wins debate“, I am just as frustrated. Frankly, she did not exceed my expectations, although I, unlike everyone else, did not expect her to consume a live puppy during Thursday’s festivities. Nor did a expect a repeat of horrific Katie Couric interview, which, of course, was all Katie Couric’s fault. How dare she ask direct and relevant questions?

During the debate, Sarah Palin did exactly what I thought she’d do - she avoided answering direct questions, proved that the vice-presidency is way out of her league, and demonstrated an amazing strength and personality - a strength and personally that allows her to be completely ignorant of important issues without causing her the slightest bit of concern. After all, a wink and a smile solves everything - kind of like Jedi Mind Trick from Star Wars, without all of that “who’s your daddy” baggage. Well… almost.

And for those of you, like myself, who had an impossible time making sense of Palin’s responses (I wouldn’t go so far as to call them answers), I pass along to you the Sarah Palin Debate Flow Chart. If only we would have had it Thursday…

We’re back from our four-day trip to Yosemite National Park. If you haven’t visited Yosemite, and I hadn’t until this trip, you really should. It’s quite the amazing place, even if the waterfalls were fairly dry - a rarity even for this time of year. Still, it was nice to get away from the laptop and the cellphone for a few days - and I even enjoyed our hike up Lembert Dome. And I’m not exactly what one would call a “hiker”. Anyway, it’s back to the grind…

Photos from our trip are here.

<itunes:summary>This week, we feature various artists attached to the Canadian indie-rock scene, with special emphasis on the various Broken Social Scene connections. I wish I could take credit for the idea behind this theme, but it largely was inspired by a conversation I had on this message board - so thanks to Jamie aka Bullitt for the idea.

And instead of the requisite Tom Lehrer, we say goodbye to Isaac Hayes.

Last Friday, I took my monthly trip to our transmitter site at Broadcast Peak, and discovered a dead mouse. That’s not always a unique thing, as Broadcast Peak is in a very remote area, and it’s not unusual for a mouse to end its days around our facility. One even found it’s way into the electrical part of our backup generator, and… well, there wasn’t a whole lot left - although it got the final laugh. Cost of a new generator: over $8000 (includes rodent prevention).

One of the other critters that enjoys broadcast sites are black widows. I routinely see these little creepies when I first enter - where they immediately run and hide out of site and proving that they are, in fact, more scared of us than we are of them (please, no one tell them different).

Apparently, between visits, and mouse tangled with a black widow, and the end result is the photo below:

That is the skeletal remains of a mouse suspended in the remaining web of a black widow spider… and easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen. And if you feel sorry for the mouse… think bubonic plague.
